DOI (Digital Object Identifier)
Also called doi, digital object identifier
A DOI is a permanent link to a specific piece of published work, staying valid even if the journal's website is redesigned or the paper moves. It's what a citation manager actually resolves against.
In context
You'll usually need this when your reference manager can't find a source, or when checking that a citation points to the real, final version.
Why it matters
It lets you verify a citation actually resolves to a real, existing source. A DOI that doesn't resolve is a warning sign.
