Also called ethics exemption, ethics waiver

An exemption or waiver is a formal determination that a study doesn't need full ethics review, usually because it uses existing public data or poses minimal risk. It still has to be requested and granted, not assumed.

In context

You'll usually need this when your project only uses secondary or publicly available data and a full review would be disproportionate.
