Also called gray literature

Grey literature is material that hasn't gone through commercial or peer-reviewed publishing: theses, government reports, conference proceedings, preprints. It often contains findings that never made it into a journal at all.

You'll usually need this when a topic is too new or too niche for the peer-reviewed literature to have caught up.
