In-text citation vs. reference list
The in-text citation is the short marker appearing where a source is used in the writing itself. The reference list is the full bibliographic detail, appearing once, at the end. Every in-text citation must correspond to an entry in the list, and vice versa.

You'll usually need this when checking your document for citations that don't have a matching reference list entry, or vice versa.
