A free, permanent identifier that distinguishes one researcher from every other researcher, even ones who share the same name, and stays with you across institutions, publications, and your entire career.
In context
You'll usually need this when submitting a manuscript or grant application that asks for a persistent author ID.
Why it matters
Journal and conference submission systems increasingly require it, and it lets your published work stay correctly attributed to you specifically, not confused with someone else's.
