Paradigm shift

A paradigm shift is Kuhn's term for a fundamental change in a field's accepted assumptions and methods, not just an incremental addition to existing knowledge but a genuine change in the underlying framework itself.

In context

You'll usually need this when describing a field-wide change in assumptions rather than a single study's incremental finding.
