Regression to the mean
Regression to the mean is the tendency for an extreme measurement to be followed by a more average one on remeasurement, sometimes mistaken for a real effect of an intervention when it's actually a statistical artefact.
In context
You'll usually need this when an intervention's apparent effect might actually just be an extreme initial measurement drifting back toward average.
