Signposting (academic writing)

Also called signposting

Signposting is explicit language telling the reader what a section will do before it does it ("This section examines..."), helping a reader navigate a long, complex document without getting lost.

In context

You'll usually need this in a long or complex document where a reader needs explicit orientation to what's coming next.
