Voice (active vs. passive)

Also called active voice, passive voice

Active voice states who performed an action directly ("The researcher collected data"). Passive voice omits or de-emphasises the actor ("Data was collected"), academic convention varies by field and should match the expected style of the target programme or journal.

In context

You'll usually need this when deciding whether to name the actor directly or de-emphasise it, matching your field's expected convention.
