Framing Your Question
Problematisation
Also called problematization
Problematisation is a stronger, less common strategy than gap-spotting: challenging an assumption underlying an entire body of literature, rather than incrementally extending it (Sandberg and Alvesson, 2011). Strong doctoral proposals often combine gap-spotting with at least one problematised assumption.
In context
You'll usually need this when your contribution is more than filling a hole, when it's questioning something the field has taken for granted.
